Life at Linden Ponds
Linden Ponds recognized more than 50 family caregivers, people who assume responsibility for the welfare of another person at the Hingham retirement community. All family caregivers were offered a free day of inspiration, information and pampering.
"For those who care for someone, it can be physically and emotionally challenging whether they live with the person they are caring for or not," said Bonnie Haley, LSW, Social Worker, Linden Ponds. "Being a long-distance care partner has its own set of challenges. Whether the family caregiver has a child with special needs, a spouse with health or memory issues or any other family member who depends on you for help, the responsibility that person assumes makes them a partner in their care. It takes a kind person with special skills to be an effective caregiver and we wanted to recognize those who care for others."
Rev. Kathleen Rusnak opened the day and then speakers from Linden Ponds, South Shore Elder Services and the Welch Healthcare and Retirement Group offered information about resources available to caregivers.
Family caregivers enjoyed lunch together, attended classes in meditation, journaling, dance, yoga, laughter, family dynamics and more and got pampered in the Linden Ponds Beauty Salon.
"The theme of the day, 'Focusing on the Light: An Approach to Life and Caregiving' helped family caregiver participants focus on the surviving strengths of the person they care for and to be mindful not only of the challenges of caregiving, but of the many blessings that come our way when we are caregivers," said Haley. "Caregiver Dot Meyer said it well: "Family Caregiver Day was filled with all the necessary things to make our lives happier, easier and showed us the way to 'Focus on the Light."
